Greenhouse Repaired and Refreshed

Medford, NY-- During one of the warmest weeks of this past summer, Options Building Mechanics, Winton Johnson and Carl Delahunt, set to the task of making substantial repairs to Options Greenhouse. The greenhouse which serves as a pre-vocational training program where residents with mental illness learn basic horticultural skills was aging and in need of some major renovation.
Options first “restored” and began to make use of the greenhouse in the late 1980’s. Repairs have been made through the years, but the work completed this summer was more comprehensive. New foundation and facade materials, piping, framing, door jams, heating ducts, outtake vents and plastic covering make for a much more efficient operation.

“Carl and Winton were really awesome. I can’t say enough about the great job they did” said Kristine Farrell, Horticulturist.  “All of the updates help to fight against insects, disease, fungus and bacteria. The greenhouse maintains temperature and retains moisture more efficiently which is better for the plants.”

Options Greenhouse operates four days a week with an average three to six residents participating daily. Participants are currently harvesting fall plantings, creating seasonal wreaths, taking cuttings for house plants, and preparing the planting beds for winter.
