Fire Devastates Options Thrift Shop

Lake Ronkonkoma, NY---On Friday, August 17th, a fire caused serious damage to the Options Thrift Shop located at 392 Hawkins Avenue.  The fire occurred at about 3:00am and was reported by a passing taxi-cab driver.  Thankfully, the building was unoccupied and no one was injured.  Officials from the Town of Brookhaven Division of Fire Prevention and the Suffolk County Police Department Arson Squad are investigating the cause of the fire.

For the past sixteen years, Options’ Thrift Shop has been part of the Lake Ronkonkoma community.  The thrift shop, provides Options' program participants with disabilities a volunteer opportunity where they learn basic retail skills in a supportive environment.  Learning to operate a cash register, price items, design displays, and interact with customers are just some of the skills that are learned at the thrift shop.  The shop is also a valuable resource for individuals and families in need of low-cost, gently used clothing, books, toys and household items.

“I can’t tell you how sad this makes us all” said Linda Longo, Community Resources Coordinator, and supervisor at the thrift shop.  “We have a solid base of support in this community.  Our program participants, volunteers, and customers are just heartbroken.”

Options Thrift Shop will be unable to take donations and will remain closed until repairs can be made.  If you would like to learn more about Options' programs please call (631) 361-9020.  To lend your support to Options, please send your contributions to:
