Options Awarded NYS Supportive Housing Program Funds |
Options for Community Living, Inc. recently was awarded $414,720 under the New York State Supportive Housing Program (NYSSHP) through the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. This NYSSHP grant will enable Options to assist adults with psychiatric disabilities in the agency’s supportive housing program on Long Island.
“The NYSSP grant will provide financial support for Options case managers who provide direct care services and teach daily living skills to residents with mental illness in our long-term supportive housing program,” stated Diana Antos Arens, executive director, Options for Community Living. The agency supports 192 individuals residing in scattered 64 houses in Suffolk County through this program. Options case managers visit the homes, ensure that residents remain in good health; teach skills, such as cooking, budgeting and much more so that the residents can continue to live in the community independently. |

Options Receives Grant From Burpee Foundation Inc. |
(Smithtown, NY – September 26, 2011) – Options for Community Living, Inc. was the recipient of a $5,000 grant from Burpee Foundation, Inc. The grant has enabled Options to purchase much needed seeds and supplies for their Greenhouse.
The Options Greenhouse – which is located at one of the agency’s supervised residences – offers pre-vocational training opportunities for clients who are interested in growing plants and learning basic horticultural skills. The Greenhouse is open four days a week with an average of three to five residents participating daily. In addition to learning horticultural skills, participants spend time during the winter months in the community residence craft room creating seasonal wreaths, which are sold to the public at Options Thrift Shop, 392 Hawkins Avenue, Ronkonkoma.

New York State Senator Lee Zeldin Tours Options Community Residence |
(Medford, NY – September 8, 2011) – Options for Community Living, Inc. was pleased to host an informational site visit from Senator Lee Zeldin at their Medford community residence for adults recovering from mental illness. In addition to the Options’ staff and representatives from the Association for Community Living Agencies, Senator Zeldin had the opportunity to meet several residents, tour the community residence and learn more about the many critical mental health and HIV/AIDS programs and services that Options for Community Living provides to individuals and families across Long Island.

Options Awarded HUD Grant |
Smithtown, NY---Options for Community Living, Inc., a not-for-profit agency serving Long Island residents with mental illness, HIV/AIDS and homeless families, received an award of over $1 million through HUD’s Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS Program (HOPWA). This award supports the development of three residences with supportive services.
The NYS Department of Health reports as of December 2008, that cumulatively, 8482 individuals in Nassau/Suffolk Counties were diagnosed with HIV or AIDS. With more AIDS cases than any other suburban area in the United States and a very high cost of living, Long Islanders who are homeless have few places to turn. |

Options Thrift Shop Grand Re-opening |
Lake Ronkonkoma-- On Wednesday, December 8, a gathering of supporters met at Options Thrift Shop at 392 Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma to celebrate its grand reopening.
"We're so happy to be back" said Linda Longo, as she welcomed over 30 supporters of the agency and the thrift shop to enjoy this long awaited celebration.

Motorola Goes Green and Global for Options |
Medford, NY-- With programs that serve over 1000 adults and children in need each year and more than 150 units of affordable housing throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Options for Community Living, Inc. gladly welcomed 15 employees from Motorola to volunteer on their 5th Annual Global Day of Service.
On Wednesday, October 13, the group assembled on the grounds of Options' Medford group home and set to work. The home is located on a large piece of land and has an operating greenhouse and planting beds where program participants garden and learn horticultural skills. The volunteers weeded, pulled dead plants, cut back branches, trimmed, edged and spread mulch. |

Motorola Summer Interns Volunteer |
Suffolk County, NY -- On Friday, July 16, a team of volunteers from Motorola, Inc. spent their morning working at one of Options Transitional Housing sites. The team was made up student interns all participating in Motorola's Intern Day of Service. In just a few hours, the group had branches trimmed and bushes cleared. The property was much improved by the groups effort and Options is grateful for Motorola's support!

Payless Gives Shoes 4 Kids |
| Smithtown, NY -- This winter, Payless Shoesource partnered with nonprofit agencies throughout the country in a grass roots campaign to deliver $1.2 million in free shoes to children of families in need. With more than 2,900 nonprofits applying, Options was among 700 organizations selected. Thanks to the 2009 Payless Gives Shoes 4 Kids Program, 75 gift certificates for new shoes were delivered to families in need in Options' programs just in time for the holiday season. |

Chatterton Student Council Answers Community Need |
Merrick, NY -- Student Council Members at Roland Chatterton Elementary School in Merrick organized a collection of everyday needs and hygiene items for low-income families receiving services from Options for Community Living, Inc.
The school-wide collection resulted in 61 gift bags stocked with toothpaste, lip balm, shampoo, soap, cotton swabs, lotion, batteries and more. Jennifer Baldwin, Options Program Supervisor, met the students and picked up the gift bags.
"The students were really great" said Jen. "We are very appreciative of the students, their families, the school, and the Student Council Advisor, Angela Kremberg, for taking on this effort."

Bette's Knitting Circle Spreading Holiday Cheer |
Smithtown, NY-- Members of Bette's Knitting Circle meet once monthly at the Gurwin Geriatric Nursing Facility to create beautiful hand made items which they donate to people in need. This is the third year that the circle has been able to provide our program participants with colorful knitted and crocheted scarves for the holidays. Thirty scarves were donated by this talented and generous group.

Community Service Options for Business Students |

A Fresh Start for a New School Year |

New Supportive Housing Project Opens Doors |
Suffolk County, NY--- This summer, Options completed renovations to four new supportive housing sites. Three adults live independently in each home, and receive regular visits from an Options Case Manager. One of the homes is adapted to be handicapped accessible for residents in need of accommodation. Situated near public transportation, residents are able to access community resources easily.
Supportive housing is long term, affordable housing linked to services. It provides low-income, disabled and formerly homeless people the help and support they need to stay housed and live independent, healthy and fulfilling lives. Supportive housing is the single most effective, and most cost-efficient, way to reduce homelessness. It strengthens communities and helps integrate people with disabilities and other special needs into the life of their neighborhoods. Options owns and operates over 100 scattered supportive housing sites in the Long Island Region.

Fire Devastates Options Thrift Shop |
Lake Ronkonkoma, NY---On Friday, August 17th, a fire caused serious damage to the Options Thrift Shop located at 392 Hawkins Avenue. The fire occurred at about 3:00am and was reported by a passing taxi-cab driver. Thankfully, the building was unoccupied and no one was injured. NY Assemblyman James Conte visits group home |
Huntington Station, NY--- Twelve adults recovering from mental illness share household chores and work toward independent living at the Options' community residence that has operated in Huntington Station for the last 23 years. On Friday, April 27, Assemblyman James Conte visited the group home as well as two smaller homes for individuals who with support and assistance, live independently.
Assemblyman Conte was interested in the progress made by Options' program participants. "It was a pleasure to witness first-hand, how Options is preparing these hardworking adults to live independently. I applaud their efforts," said the Assemblyman representing Huntington Station. |
